The backlight is one of those parts of a LCD monitor that becomes dim over time, causing the screen to lose its brightness.
Most LCD monitors use a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL tube) as the backlight source, powered by an inverter. When these bulbs become old, they start flickering and can sometimes turn the screen pink.
Rather than replace the monitor when this happens, simply replace the backlight for about $9 (the approximate cost of a case lighting kit).
Go for a 15", 17" or 19" kit (or higher) based on your monitor size. Often, you won't need to change the inverter, so that can save you some money there as well.
