CCFL Backlight Tube Used in a Laptop LCD Screen

Like most light-emitting electronic gadgets, LCD laptop screens too are powered by a thin fluorescent tube called the Backlight.

In most cases, it’s a CCFL tube (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) that emits a bright white light under a high frequency input. This in turn lights up your laptop screen from behind.

Within the laptop case, the CCFL tube is paired with an inverter to complete the backlight effect.

If you can still see the laptop's startup screen faintly then your display is fine and you don't need to replace it. Just shine a torchlight or flashlight into the screen and you will see a dim silhouette of your desktop area.

When a LCD display goes partially or fully blank, it is most likely a backlight or inverter problem. It can also be the wire that carries electric power to the backlight tube.

In either case, it is cheaper to replace the inverter or power wire than the whole screen. You can buy cheap replacement LCD parts for $9-12 based on your screen size & brand.
