Blank Laptop Screen - Does a Dark LCD Screen Indicate a Faulty Backlight?

If your laptop screen is not completely dark or black - i.e., you can still see the desktop faintly - then it could be an inverter failure or a defective backlight bulb.

In most cases, it's a failing backlight rather than a failed inverter.

If you see intermittent bright images on your screen with pinkish tones then it's definitely the backlight. You can replace it cheaply for $6-12 with parts from Ebay or other LCD repair stores.

Make sure you get a backlight with the connector attached to it so that you can plug it into the inverter board.

Blank Laptop LCD - How To Fix A LCD Display That Has Gone Completely Black

If you can still see the laptop's startup screen faintly then your display is fine and you don't need to replace it. Just shine a torchlight or flashlight into the screen and you will see a dim silhouette of your desktop area.

When a LCD display goes partially or fully blank, it is most likely a backlight or inverter problem. It can also be the wire that carries electric power to the backlight tube.

In either case, it is cheaper to replace the inverter or power wire than the whole screen. You can buy cheap replacement LCD parts for $9-12 based on your screen size & brand.
