Dim Dark PC Monitor – Reasons for Dark Screen in CRT & LCD Monitors

Both CRT and LCD monitors are prone to dimming due to different reasons:
  • Dimming in a CRT monitor happens because of low emission. If the power supply and electronic parts are fine then this is a likely cause for the monitor going dim.
  • Dimming in a LCD monitor is because the backlight has become old, or the inverter that supplies power to it is faulty. In either case, replacing the backlight/inverter is far cheaper than buying a new monitor.

Blank Laptop Screen - Does a Dark LCD Screen Indicate a Faulty Backlight?

If your laptop screen is not completely dark or black - i.e., you can still see the desktop faintly - then it could be an inverter failure or a defective backlight bulb.

In most cases, it's a failing backlight rather than a failed inverter.

If you see intermittent bright images on your screen with pinkish tones then it's definitely the backlight. You can replace it cheaply for $6-12 with parts from Ebay or other LCD repair stores.

Make sure you get a backlight with the connector attached to it so that you can plug it into the inverter board.
