Like all electronic components, the ones soldered into an LCD monitor screen too have an indicative lifespan. While components continue to function even after their rated lifespan is over, their performance degrades by over 50%.

• Under the normal operating conditions of temperature, humidity & handling LCD electronics have a lifespan of around 100,000 hrs (12 years). It's the same with the LED backlight as well.

• However, the CCFL backlight lasts 15,000 hrs before it loses 50% of its brightness.

• The EL (electroluminescent) backlight lasts about 10,000 hrs depending on the make, brand and quality.

As explained in the LCD electronics course, that EL is different from CCFL, which has a higher life span. Most modern LCD panels use CCFL backlight tube.

How To Repair Common Hardware & Electronic Problems of a LCD Monitor

Common problems that affect a LCD monitor include:

• Failing backlight bulb
• Burned capacitors

Both CRT and LCD monitors are prone to dimming due to different reasons:

• Dimming in a CRT monitor happens because of low emission. If the power supply and electronic parts are fine then this is a likely cause for the monitor going dim.

CCFL Backlight - The Weak Electronic Link in the Performance of a LCD Monitor

Though LCD backlight is expected to last 4-7 years without problems, some tubes start dimming as early as 1-2 years.

A number of factors contribute to backlight failure:

• voltage fluctuation & brownout
• cheap parts / fake parts / used parts 
• humidity & heat 
• (in rare cases) a quality or manufacturing defect

Since the CCFL backlight lights up the screen, losing it will cause the screen to dim, and hence, it is a weak electronic link in the overall usability of a LCD monitor.
