LCD Monitor Performance Tips – 3 Easy Tips to Get the Most from your LCD Monitor

1. LCD monitors have only one optimum resolution – the highest. Keep the color mode at 32 bits to prevent dithering.

2. If your graphic card and monitor have VGA and DVI outputs then always use the digital cable.

3. Unless you have a pivot monitor, use the highest frequency to avoid image flickering.

PC Monitor Performance - 6 Factors That Affect The Display Quality of CRT & LCD Monitors

LCD monitor display quality depends on the video source, though performance varies with the brand you own or buy. Across monitor types, video source quality depends on 6 factors:
  1. Resolution
  2. Bandwidth
  3. Signal quality
  4. Cable & connector quality
  5. Sharpness & Focus
  6. Electronic component stability (capacitors, circuit boards, SMPS, etc.)
In my own experience, Samsung, Apple and Sony have some of the best performance monitors for PCs & laptops while LG monitors are cost-effective alternatives.

CCFL Backlight - The Weak Electronic Link in the Performance of a LCD Monitor

Though LCD backlight is expected to last 4-7 years without problems, some tubes start dimming as early as 1-2 years.

A number of factors contribute to backlight failure:
  • voltage fluctuation & brownout
  • cheap parts / fake parts / used parts
  • humidity & heat
  • (in rare cases) a quality or manufacturing defect
Since the CCFL backlight lights up the screen, losing it will cause the screen to dim, and hence, it is a weak electronic link in the overall usability of a LCD monitor.

Here are some facts about the LCD backlight bulb:
  • A backlight is a thin fluorescent tube that lights up the LCD screen
  • Most backlights are either EL (electroluminescent) or CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp)
  • A new backlight tube has a life span from 5,000-15,000 hours of usage before it loses 50% of its brightness.
